The Groppone winery is situated on a hillside in Diano d'Alba, opposite the Castle of Grinzane Cavour. It is an important area for the production of wines. The Grimaldi family have been producing wines in this area for three generations now. Giuseppe, the grandfather of the current owner, started the family business at the beginning of the last century. He made the wines himself as well as marketing them. He used to bring a large barrel of his wine on a horse drawn cart, to the market in Alba to sell to his clients. At the beginning of 1950's his son Carlo took over the running of the business. He rose to the challenge with a passion and began to expand the business by acquiring more vineyards and extending the wine cellar. He also began selling his wines further afield in other parts of Italy and took the first steps towards exporting abroad. In the early 1980's, along with his son Gino, Carlo began to modernise the technology of the wine cellar. This measure greatly improved the wine production process. The distribution of the wines has also increased in the last few decades to include exports to northern Europe, the U.S.A., Canada and Japan. These are the most important markets for wine today.
